Miles Bennell, a family doctor in the small California town of Santa Mira, returns from an out-of-town meeting and is inundated with calls from residents who say their family members are no longer the same or have changed in one way or another. . . He believed it was some kind of mass hallucination and referred her to a psychiatrist. He meets his old friend Becky Driscoll and starts dating her again. During dinner they are interrupted by crime writer Jack Belicec, who takes them to see the body of, which was found on his pool table and mysteriously has no identifying markswhatsoever, not even fingerprints. While Jack sleeps, his wife sees a body similar to Jack's, right down to the fresh cut on his hand.Miles finds a similar body in Becky's basement. However, when they try to show the bodies to the police, they disappear and, in broad daylight, believe that they too have succumbed to collective illusions. But when it gets dark again, they find the pods in Miles' greenhouse. As they try to escape, they find that locals everywhere have turned into hostile, emotionless groups trying to stop them.
