Joe Kidd arrived in the New Mexico town of Sinola in 1900, where Luis Chama was leading Mexican Americans to protest the illegal expropriation of their land. Joe Kidd, in prison after a drunken rampage, watches as the Chama gang, angry at the judge for not listening to their concerns, steals fake land grants from the courthouse and sets it on fire. The rebels want to kidnap the judge, but Kidd saves him. A group is formed and Kidd is invited to join. Underthe command ofFrank Harlan, they took more Mexican Americans hostage and threatened to kill five if Chama did not surrender.Kidd is convinced that Harlan's tactics are cruel.
