Based on the true story of Henri Charrière, also known as Papillon, which means "butterfly" in French (the character also has a large tattoo of a butterfly). Papillon, a petty criminal, is wrongly convicted of murder and sentenced to life imprisonment in a French penal colony in “Guiana” (French Guiana, South America). Papillon is determined to escape, but in one trial after another he encounters difficulties that ultimately lead to his recapture. He continues to try to escape, despite being placed in solitary confinement inas part of his punishment.
