Early in the film, one of the characters tells us that earthworms can be brought to the surface using electricity, but that they somehow turn into rabidcarnivores. In fact, during a nighttime storm, some power lines break and hit the ground, dragging millions of man-eating worms from the ground into the city, where they quickly begin devouring residents.
