Verden Fell buries his late wife Ligeia, who committed suicide, but he is sure that she is not really dead. Some time later, Rowena Trevanian, the daughter of a neighboring lord, was thrown from a horse onto Ligeia's grave during a foxhunt. Fell appears and insists that she come to the abbey where he lives so that he can look after her. She is fascinated by the strange and troubled fur and agrees to marry him. But after the wedding, he becomes possessed when he sees her possessed by Ligeia's spirit.
