An old college friend hires Scottie to look after his wife Madeleine, who is believed to be possessed by the spirit of her ancestor named Carlotta. Scottie follows her to San Francisco and finds himself drawn to Madeleine and her obsession with death. Without knowing it, he becomes a character in a complex plot and is determined to find out the truth behind it.
