A naval standoff ensued in the Pacific in the summer of 1942, with the American and Japanese navies equally divided waiting for the other to launch a new offensive. “Midway” tells the story of the historic June battle in which Japanese aircraft carriers bravely encountered American forces operating from three aircraft carriers and numerous buffer stocks in an attempt to capture Midway Island and lure the American fleet to its doom. It was the first battle in which naval aviation was used extensively in, and in the end the Japanese naval air force was completely destroyed,paving the way for American offensives in 1943 and 1944 that finally ended the war in the Pacific.
